The Biotechnical Faculty is part of the University of Ljubljana founded in 1919. With over 50000 undergraduate and postgraduate students participating in more than 130 undergraduate and 130 postgraduate programs, it ranks among the biggest universities in the world. A total of 20 faculties, 3 art academies and 3 university colleges employ approximately 3,000 full-time university teaching staff. The group participating in BIOTRACE IP has experience with many classical production, spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms and all modern methods in taxonomy including molecular tools (i.e.: genotyping analyses of genome, electrophoretic karyotyping and PCR-RFLP of the rDNA, etc.). Recent activities have been focused also at increasing antibiotic resistance of microbial isolates from food, mainly poultry meat, and development of PCR-methods for its detection. Another recently introduced field is potentially increasing resistance and survival of microbial cells as a consequence of stress response. In terms of stress studies they manage various methods on genome (real time PCR on expression of GSH1, GTT1, HSP104 and RNR3 genes, DNA damage) and proteome (DNA damage, or ROS cause oxidative damages to proteins, DNA and lipids resulting, among others, in carbonylated and fragmented proteins, DNA base oxidations, single and double DNA strand breaks, lipid peroxides and aldehydes).
